Hurricane Update, 9/5

Dear STE Community,

Gym

Murray Center Gym Floor Demolition

Today we had nearly 40 volunteers on campus to help with additional cleanout of storage areas and the continuation of demo work on our church and gym. Servpro helped us perform tasks that we were unable to take on during the initial week following the flood. Now that we have moved to the recovery phase, we need volunteers to help us as we restart and restore our church and school.

We need adult and student volunteers for tomorrow, September 6. Adults will do the skilled labor and any work requiring power tools. Students will be working in teams to clean, remove trash, sweep, mop, etc. Students under 16 should be accompanied by a parent. If you are available, please meet at 9:00 a.m. (or when you can) in the courtyard at STE. Bring the following items if you have them:
• Gloves
• Safety goggles
• Dust masks
• Sledgehammers
• Crowbars
• Circular saws
Dress for dirty construction work and be advised that the air conditioning is out in parts of the campus. Adults doing skilled labor should wear sturdy shoes, and students may wear tennis shoes. For STE’s protection, we are asking all volunteers to sign a liability waiver. Be sure to sign in and sign out as this helps with our FEMA records. Food and water will be provided for all volunteers.

Please be aware that beginning tomorrow, our parking lot will be closed for the foreseeable future. You will be able to park in the overflow parking lot directly across Endicott from our current lot. Because the overflow lot has been used to hold storage containers for Meyerland Plaza, parking will be on an as available basis.

We look forward to having our Upper School students and parents on campus for Upper School Parent Night tomorrow, September 6. Please gather at 6:30 p.m. in the courtyard for a discussion on the transition to the Houston Christian Assembly location.

We cannot neglect the spiritual needs of our community as we continue our recovery efforts. Join us this Friday, September 8, at 6:00 p.m. for a time of prayer for our church and school, our community, and each other. We’ll be meeting in the Senior Room, located in the Upper School building in room 103.

There has been an overwhelming response to our matching gift challenge so far. In the last two days alone, we have raised $146,000. Combined with the $228,000 we had already received in gifts and pledges, we are making significant progress toward our short-term fundraising goal. We have also rolled out stesflood.org, a site that describes the full impact of the flooding on our campus and the many ways our supporters can help. Think of it as a one-stop shop for our fundraising efforts.

As always, thank you for your ongoing prayers and offers of support.

God bless,

Michael F. Cusack, Jr.
